The horse chestnut tree belongs to the Sapindaceae family, which derives its name from its origin in countries in the Middle East and India. The active ingredient of this tree is its seeds, which are rich in triterpene saponins, the most common of which is aescin (a mixture of 30 saponins derived from aglycones). Other active ingredients such as anthocyanidins and flavonoids can also be found.
